CEBU, Philippines - Cebu first district Representative Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas filed a resolution in the House of Representatives commending 19-year-old Jamie Herrell of Cebu City for being crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2014.

"Ms. Jamie R. Herrell deserves to be commended for the pride and recognition that she has brought to the Filipino people," said Gullas in a House Resolution No. 1152 filed last Wednesday afternoon.

Herrell oozed with confidence to best 49 other contestants for the title and will compete for the international Miss Earth crown this year.

She was also adjudged Best in Cultural Attire and Best in Swimsuit. The Miss Aliwan and Sinulog Festival Queen 2013 titleholder was also chosen Miss Solaire in the pageant.

Gullas said Herrell's accomplishment as beauty queen brings not only the needed respite from the political and social issues but also "inspires many struggling, poor and calamity-affected Filipinos that they too can make a difference in their lives and for the country."

The Miss Philippines-Earth 2014 competition is not only a beauty pageant but is also a forum for promoting the protection of Mother Nature.

The Miss Earth, which started in 2001, pageant is considered as among the world's four largest beauty pageants, along with the Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International.

The Philippines won its first and only Miss Earth title courtesy of then 22-year-old Karla Henry who also hailed from Cebu City.  (FREEMAN)
