Ceremonial walk for fire safety held

CEBU, Philippines - A ceremonial "Walk for Fire Safety" organized by the city fire department yesterday morning welcomed Talisay City's observance of Fire Prevention Month.

Talisay City Fire Marshal Randy Mendaros told reporters the ceremonial walk was participated by police personnel and some students from a big university in Cebu.

With city hall as starting point, the walk followed the Cebu South Coastal Road near Barangay San Isidro before turning to Barangay Dumlog, Barangay Mohon and then back to the city hall, according to Mendaros.

Fire truck sirens reverberated through the vicinity as a symbol of reminding the people to be always watchful so that fire incidents could be mitigated, if not totally prevented.

The fire marshal, however, said that the formal kick-off ceremony on the observance of Fire Prevention Month will take place tomorrow morning after a Holy Eucharist to be celebrated at the city hall.

After the mass, a short program and a motorcade will follow.

Mendaros said private establishments, along with officials and ordinary citizens from different barangays, are expected to grace the undertaking tomorrow.

Hoping to instill fire prevention in the minds of young children, the fire department will also spearhead a poster making contest on Mar. 10 where elementary pupils are expected to join.

Throughout the month, officials and members of the city fire department will also visit different barangays to conduct fire safety lectures to residents, Mendaros said, calling the program "Ugnayan sa Barangay.

The program includes fire truck visibility and home safety inspection, among other topics. — (FREEMAN)
