Cebu towns taking steps to help jobless

CEBU, Philippines - The municipalities of Liloan and Consolacion are taking steps in helping jobseekers land to jobs through their respective Public Employment and Service Offices.

The towns have been assisting jobseekers by closely coordinating with major companies in Cebu and Manila wanting to hire Cebuanos for both local and overseas jobs.

Liloan Mayor Vincent Franco "Duke" Frasco said his full support to the jobless could be seen with the series of job fairs being held in his town.

Hundreds of those working in the different companies in Mandaue, Cebu and Lapu-Lapu Cities, especially those locators inside the Mactan Export Processing Zone, have been given assistance by PESO.

PESO-Liloan has received recognition from the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office 7 for their "good performance." Accordingly, the town's PESO actively supported the programs of DOLE's regional office in helping jobseekers.

In Consolacion town, Mayor Teresa Alegado also gave support to PESO through launching similar job fairs.

Alegado asked businessmen in Consolacion town to prioritize local residents in job placements. In return, she vowed to investors that town regulations on business establishments will remain friendly.

Earlier, businessmen in Consolacion town reportedly lauded the administration of Mayor Teresa Alegado for implementing programs aimed at fast-tracking the release of papers for renewal and getting of new business permits.

The businessmen in the town echoed their appreciation based of the results of last month's renewal of business permits for business and industrial establishments that are based in the town.

Alegado issued a directive to the Municipal Treasurer's Office to fast-track the release of business permits by adopting the one-stop-shop.

The mayor said that addressing the needs of the private sector through quick services is one way of appreciating their importance. She further assured that the town remains business friendly to current and prospective investors.

She added that after SM City Consolacion was constructed, a number of business and industrial establishments are now putting their businesses in Consolacion. —  (FREEMAN)
