New garbage trucks sought for Talisay brgy

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Councilor Antonio Bacaltos Jr., who is the chairman of the committee on environmental protection, is seeking help from Mayor Johnny De los Reyes for the acquisition of mini-garbage trucks for Barangay Tangke.

"It is the paramount duty of  the barangay to render basic services to all its constituents and foremost of these basic services is the collection of garbage in the barangays," Bacaltos said, adding that Tangke is a densely populated barangay where garbage collection is major concern.

Last year, the Talisay City government sought the help of the Provincial Capitol for the acquisition of trucks for Barangays Pooc, Biasong, Dumlog, Mohon and Lawaan I. Only 15 of the 22 barangays have garbage trucks of their own.

So far, three barangays have been declared pilot areas for "no segregation, no collection" campaign, which started last Sept. 1. These barangays are Pooc, Poblacion, Lawaan III and Bulacao.

Based on Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001, all households, as well as commercial and business establishments, are required to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes and place them in separate garbage bags, which are collected on a weekly basis.
