Lapu-Lapu roads cleared of vendors

Flor Z. Perolina - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City government yesterday demolished illegal structures standing outside the public market and confiscated goods being sold in the streets by ambulant vendors.

The clearing operation was conducted by the office of the Solid Waste Management, City Administrator’s Office, and the City Market Office.

The whole stretch of the J. P. Rizal Street, Mangubat, F. Martir, Lopez Jaena, Risdon, G. and Y dela Cerna streets are now clear of stalls and other structures.

City Market Supervisor Ma. Elena Caballes said these vendors were earlier informed about the clearing operation but many of them did not heed the call.

“Wala mi magkuwang sa pagpahibawo nila,” Caballes said.

Fruits, used clothing, automatic water dispensers, religious items, and flowers were seized and loaded into the truck of the Solid Waste Management office.

“Ang atong purpose ana aron mahawan ang kalsada  diha sa merkado,” Caballes said.

She said that it is easier this time for fire trucks and delivery vehicles to make a way into interior portions leading to the market.

Caballes said penalties will be imposed on vendors who will go back to the streets to do business.  (FREEMAN)
