This year Mandaue to construct a new market building

CEBU, Philippines - A new public market will be built in Mandaue City this year.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes yesterday said that instead of constructing a People’s Center that will replace the old dilapidated public market in Barangay Centro, the city government has decided to build a new public market in the area.

The old public market was declared unsafe after it was hit by a fire.

In view of this a new modern public market located at the back of Mandaue City Sports Complex was constructed.

However, it was declared unsafe for occupancy after it was damaged by the October 15 earthquake.

In view of this, the stall holders were temporarily distributed at the side of Mandaue Sports Complex and along the roads leading to the new public market.

Moving back the market to its original place will decongest traffic along A. Soriano Street in Barangay Centro, which is a gateway to the Mactan Cebu International Airport, Cortes said.

The market’s project design was made by Espina, Perez and Associates, although the proposal is yet to be finalized the reason why the mayor has not come up with a budget yet.

“But definitely the construction will push through this year,” he said.

The city will also prioritize the repair of classrooms.

Other priority projects include the rehabilitation of roads and drainage systems and the construction of three more Bantay Mandaue 161 substations, a joint project with ERUF for a quick response to any emergency. – Flor Z. Perolina
