CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) in Mandaue City hopes the rehabilitation of school buildings in the city, which was devastated by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake last October 15, will start to commence this month.
Benjamin Tiongzon, the administrative officer of DepEd Mandaue, said after the earthquake, most public school buildings in the city were declared unsafe for occupancy and students in both elementary and high schools started to hold classes in tents while others underneath trees.
He said under the circumstances, the children are unruly.
“Unruly na dyud intawon na sila ilabi na kon di dayon makapuli ilang mga maestro,†Tiongson said.
He fears that children could easily get sick if constantly exposed to the elements.
“Di sad nato masabtan ang panahon ron, init kaayo unya mokalit lang ug uwan,†Tiongson said.
Tiongson said the city government has set aside a budget for the repair of school buildings.
Among the schools devastated by the earthquake last October include Mandaue City Central School, Subangdaku Technical-Vocational School, Labogon National High School, Umapad Elementary School, Mandaue Comprehensive High School, and the Canduman National High School. (FREEMAN)
