Some subdivisions in Lapu-Lapu utilize private trash collectors

Jose P. Sollano - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Some subdivisions in Lapu-Lapu City have employed the services of private garbage collectors because some barangays do not have enough trucks to do the collection.

The city government, however, said the haulers should have permits to make their business legal.

Subdivisions allegedly collect fees from residents to pay the private haulers.

Garbage collected is brought to the Material Recovery Facility in Compostela town.

The Material Recovery Facility operated by Lapu-Lapu does not accept garbage from private individuals.

Mayor Paz Radaza has directed all barangay captains to oversee the collection of garbage in their respected barangays.

The City Solid Waste Management Office will help barangays collect garbage.

Last year, a number of barangay captains were charged in the City Prosecutor’s Office for failure to collect garbage. (FREEMAN)
