Detainee, 18, gives birth at police station

Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - At around nine yesterday morning, an 18-year-old detainee at the Danao City Police Station gave birth while inside the comfort room.

Roselyn Ruta, of barangay Looc, asked jailer PO1 Doniel Capuyan to be allowed to use the comfort room for prisoners and a few minutes later, Capuyan heard a baby crying.

Capuyan took Ruta to the Danao Provincial Hospital.

The young mother was arrested by the police Tuesday afternoon by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by Judge Maria Josefa Ramos of the Municipal Trial Court in Cities in Danao City for grave threats and malicious mischief.

Desk officer SPO2 Ildefonso Prosia said the police knew Ruta was seven months pregnant but did not expect she would give birth yesterday.

“Mahulog nga premature ang bata,” Prosia said.

Ruta and her baby will be taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.  (FREEMAN)
