2,000 Mandaue workers plant 10,000 fruit trees

CEBU, Philippines - More than 2,000 employees of the Mandaue City government yesterday planted 10,000 fruit trees along streets and other areas in celebration of “Arbor Day” and as part of the city’s greening program.

Barangay Subangdaku was the pilot area for the tree planting program considering that the barangay has the highest survival rate of 70 percent.

Around 250 Jackfruit trees were planted in Subangdaku yesterday with Mayor Jonas Cortes leading employees in the planting.

Teachers, boy and girl scouts of Subangdaku Elementary School also planted similar trees around the barangay’s garden, located along the highway and M. Logarta Street.

Cortes said trees help minimize the effects of climate change and flash floods.

He said the perennial flooding problem is the result of the abuse on the environment, adding this is precisely the rationale in launching the “I Am Mandaue” campaign.

Barangay Subangdaku captain Ernie Manatad said native trees such as Tugas, Nangka, and Narra, among others, now are growing along the streets of Mantawi, E.0. Perez, M. Logarta and the highway. (FREEMAN)
