Would Talisay council agree to privatization?

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City council will decide today whether to privatize garbage collection and management.

Councilor Bernard Joseph T. Odilao, chairman of the committee on environment, has proposed the privatization of solid waste management and recommended a company that would collect the garbage.

In his proposed resolution, Odilao said designating the collection to a private company that has a good track record is the logical direction given the present circumstances.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Board of the City of Talisay is at the forefront of assessing the current status of the solid waste management system and is the proper body that can make appropriate recommendations on matters regarding these issues, Odilao said.

Odilao said it is established that the city government lacks the equipment, personnel, methods, and expertise on a well functioning garbage collection system within the city as well as the correct methods in operating a Landfill.

“It is also ascertained that the city’s current expenditures with regards to our solid waste management system is within reach compared to the amount range as proposed by some private companies that have recently submitted their proposals,” Odilao said.  (FREEMAN)
