Odilao: Privatize garbage collection

Garry B. Lao - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Councilor Bernard Joseph T. Odilao is still pushing for the privatization of garbage collection.

Odilao, who is the chairman of the committee on environment, wants to authorize Mayor Socrates Fernandez to enter into and sign an agreement with EVO ventures, a private company engaged in solid waste management and garbage collection.

“Despite of the efforts exerted by both the barangay and the local government, there have been instances that garbage collection schedules are delayed or otherwise uncollected due to several factors, “ Odilao said.

Odilao said sometimes garbage remains uncollected because either the garbage truck is out of commission or the driver is absent.

“To address non-collection and the proper management of our landfill, it is suitable to engage a third party to do the collection for the city, which is cost effective and at the same time managed by an expert in the field of waste management,” Odilao said.

The EVO ventures Inc., a privately owned company, which specializes on solid waste management had volunteered to assess the city’s solid waste management.

Based on its findings, there is a need to properly manage waste collection and disposal because as of this date, the waste pond has been used up because there is no proper segregation of wastes, Odilao said.  (FREEMAN)
