USC grad wins Cabahug medal
CEBU, Philippines - A summa cum laude graduate of the University of San Carlos is this year’s recipient of the Cabahug Medal of Academic Excellence.
This year’s lone gold medallist is 20-year-old Anne Mae Sarra, who graduated in Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy last March.
Sarra, in her speech, said she feels honoured and vowed to emulate and spread the values of Justice Sotero “Nong Terong “Cabahug, particularly his sincerity and dedication to work.
The family of the late Justice Sotero Cabahug recommended for the inclusion of the life and works of the “greatest son of Mandaue†in the curriculum for students in the city.
Rhett Anthony Cabahug Latonio, the grandson of the late justice, in his message during the awarding of the prestigious “Justice Sotero B. Cabahug Medal for Academic Excellence†held at Mandaue Cultural and Sports Complex, thanked the administration of Mayor Jonas Cortes in bringing back the legacy of his grandfather.
Taking cognizance of the need for the youth in Mandaue to know the legacy of his grandfather, he asked the present administration to work out a scheme wherein students in Mandaue can have a flash back of the past.
“I ask the future administrations to have a sense of history,†he said.
Justice Cabahug occupied high positions in the three branches of government, namely, defense secretary, public works secretary, justice of the Court of Appeals and congressman, among others.
During his incumbency as governor of Cebu, he constructed the present capitol building, Rizal Library in Cebu City, and the Mandaue Presidencia.
He also worked out the declaration of the present site of Camp Lapu-Lapu as a military reservation.
During his 122nd birthday celebration the other day, an exhibit on his memorabilia was opened at Parkmall, followed by a Mass, a floral offering at his monument, and a memorial lecture by Dr. Bonifacio Cabahug Jr. (FREEMAN)
