CEBU, Philippines - One hundred eighty-nine out-of-school youths graduated last April 19 from a 15-day Community Skills and Training Program of the Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA)-Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base Campus, Lapu-Lapu City.

The training included lessons in welding, basic electricity, electronic and radio repair, computer literacy, and food processing for the unemployed mothers/women.

College president Dr. Bernard Ramirez said every school break, PhilSCA offers free skills training to the less fortunate.

The training allots 10 percent to lectures while 90 percent is reserved for hands-on work for purposes of familiarity.

The program is already on its third year in Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova town, Cebu.

A lot of residents and out-of-school youth have already been employed by private companies, especially those located at the Philippine Economic Zone in the city.

Unemployed mothers or women also avail of the training in food processing.

Josephine Anino, a housewife in sitio Seaweeds, barangay Pusok Lapu-Lapu told The Freeman she learned a lot from the training in food processing.

PhilSCA campus director Dr. Nonadel Soriano said the graduates will receive certificates accredited by TESDA.

The program is free of charge to out-of-school youth and unemployed mothers in Lapu-Lapu City, Olango Island, and Codova town.  (FREEMAN)
