Dad wants stipend for volunteer RNs

CEBU, Philippines -  Registered nurses who want to render volunteer work at the Mandaue City Hospital and the City Health Office stand to receive a P20 per hour stipend from the Mandaue City government if a proposed ordinance which allocates for this stipend will be passed.

In his proposed ordinance titled “Mandaue City volunteers for the health program and appropriating the amount of eight hundred thousand to cover the grant of daily stipend to volunteers rendering services”, City Councilor Demetrio Cortes Jr. aims to facilitate just that.

The budget will be taken from the balance surplus in 2012.

“There are many graduates of various health courses who need to accumulate service hours in health facility for future employment and professional growth,” said Cortes in his ordinance.

Most of the said employees render services for free.

“Given the benefits gained by the city government from the services of the volunteer workers, it is just proper that at the very least, these volunteers be reimbursed for their daily expenses in the form of a fixed daily stipend,” Cortes added.

In Section 4 of the draft ordinance, each hour will be computed as P20 per hour of duty.  The draft ordinance passed in the first reading in the weekly session of City Council last Wednesday and is subject to a second reading next week.   (FREEMAN)
