Army’s confidential agent arrested, released

CEBU, Philippines -  An alleged drunken man who claimed to be a confidential agent of the 7th Regional Intelligence and Security Unit of Camp Lapu-Lapu in Cebu City was arrested for suspicion of discharging his gun indiscriminately Tuesday evening in Zone Sibuyas in barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City.

Crimonico Tarnate, 39, single, was arrested by village watchmen and turned over to the Basak police station.

When barangay tanods and a policeman arrived in the area, residents pointed to Tarnate.

Basak Police station chief P Sr./Insp.Wilson Abot said Tarnate was declared drunk after a liquor test at the Mandaue City Hospital.

But the police said Tarnate did not fire his gun indiscriminately.

Police found out that the gun went off as Tarnate drew it from its holster, missing his foot by inches.

Abot also said the firearm was not confiscated being supported by a memorandum receipt from the Philippine Army, and learned that Tarnate was indeed a confidential agent.

But just the same, he was detained in anticipation of the filing of complaints from residents.

Since there was none, he was released later after the reglamentary period had elapsed.

A fine, however, was imposed on him for violation of the city ordinance on drunkenness in public.  (FREEMAN)
