Empowering PWDs through sports

CEBU, Philippines — The inaugural 2KCares.org Paralympics at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles Arena in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City recently was an overwhelming success.
Drawing over 300 Persons with Disabilities showcasing their skills in six sporting disciplines, the first multi-event gathering for PWDs in Cebu was spearheaded by 2K Cares of SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Batch 2000 in partnership with Philippine Accessible Disability Services (PADS) and Cocel Marketing Corporation.
PWD athletes from Mandaue City dominated the track events and goalball while a visiting team from Maramag, Bukidnon emerged as champion in wheelchair basketball.
But more than the spirit of competition, 2K Cares Chairman Afshin Ghassemi said the purposeful activity served a launching pad of a more meaningful undertaking.
“We at 2Kcares are immensely proud and deeply moved by the overwhelming success of our recent event,” Ghassemi said in a statement. “This event was more than just a gathering—it was a powerful movement for inclusivity, empowerment, and community-driven change.”
“The passion, resilience, and unity displayed throughout the event reaffirm our mission to break barriers and create opportunities for all.”
“Seeing individuals come together, not just to participate but to champion a cause bigger than themselves, was truly inspiring,” added the president of SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Alumni Association.
“ It is a testament to what we can achieve when we uplift and support one another.”
Ghassemi assured that this is only the beginning as they are committed to expanding this initiative in the hope of reaching more people and ensuring that its impact continues to grow.
“Our future plans include stronger community engagement, more inclusive programs, and sustainable opportunities for those we aim to support. This event has laid the foundation for something even greater, and we will not stop here,” Ghassemi continued.
“To PADS, Cocel Marketing Corporation, our volunteers, partners, and every individual who contributed to this success—we extend our deepest gratitude. Your dedication fuels our mission, and together, we will continue to push boundaries, change lives, and create a future where no one is left behind,” said Ghassemi.
“This is not just an event. This is a movement. And we are just getting started,” Ghassemi ended. — (FREEMAN)
