Venancio Loyola claims January title of CEPCA monthly
CEBU, Philippines — Arena Grandmaster Venancio Loyola Jr. came out as the first champion in the 2025 edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly tournament last Sunday, January 26, at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
Loyola actually figured in four-way tie with Kristina Concepcion Belano, Restituto Lanorias, and Antonio Cabibil with similar 5.0 points but Loyola clinched the January title courtesy of a higher tiebreaker.
Aside from pocketing P3,000, Loyola also punched a ticket to CEPCA’s year-end “Battle of Champions” this December.
Belano finished second followed by Lanorias and Cabibil at third and fourth, respectively.
Maria Kristine Lavandero and Peterson Sia wound up fifth and sixth with 4.5 points each.
Completing the Top 12 were Vivencio Mendoza Jr., Jessie Supangan , Manuel Abucay Jr., Amado Olea Jr., Romualdo Muralla, and Jonathan Canque with identical 4.0 points.
Meanwhile, the top performers in their respective categories were Vivencio Mendoza Jr. (60 Above), Cedrick Li Benlot (12 Under), Peterson Sia (Cepcan A), Manuel Abucay Jr. (Cepcan B), and Angel Chelsea Tinga-al (female). — (FREEMAN)
