USJ-R Jaguars score double victory in CESAFI cage wars
CEBU, Philippines — The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars under the guidance of coach Julius Cadavis pulled off a rousing twinkill in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 24 basketball tournament on Thursday, October 10, at the Cebu Coliseum.
In the collegiate battle, the Jaguars unleashed an explosive third-quarter show to vanquish the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons, 62-51.
Elmer Echavez netted 15 points, nine rebounds, one assist and two steals to help the Jaguars even their record at 2-2.
Felvic Dorado and Vince Alfred Mananquil combined for 20 points and 17 rebounds for the Jaguars, who were ahead by only four at halftime but dropped a 16-4 bomb in the third period to take full control of the match with a 50-34 advantage going into the final 10-minute mark.
Aron Dave Kress was the lone double-digit scorer for UP Cebu with 11 points and four rebounds.
Matthew Earl Flores, Nono Wenraye Sarol, and Osias Andrew Padilla conspired for 25 points but to no avail as the Fighting Maroons suffered their second straight setback after a winning start.
Earlier, the Baby Jaguars clobbered the Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) Greywolves, 76-62, to take the solo fourth spot in the juniors division standings with a 3-1 win-loss card.
J Lord Pepito paced the Baby Jaguars with 18 points on top of eight rebounds, four steals, and one block.
Kyle Mathew Barrieta and Genlyster Epa scored 10 points each for the Baby Jaguars, who shrugged off a lukewarm performance in the early goings on the way to crush the Greywolves by 14 points.
Dirk Louis Baguio tallied 11 markers while Jasheed Cyril Ybarra had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals but their efforts proved futile as the Greywolves fell to 1-3.
