UV, UP Cebu slug it out for Alegado Cup crown

CEBU, Philippines — The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of the Phippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons knocked out their respective rivals to set up a title showdown in the inaugural Mayor Teresa Alegado Invitational Cup Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night, September 10, at the jampacked Consolacion covered court.

Reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) MVP Kent Ivo Salarda dropped 19 points as the Lancers downed the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 83-78, to book a final ticket.

AJ Sacayan and Raul Gentallan chipped in with 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Lancers, who will take on the Fighting Maroons in the championship.

Behind the red-hot troika of Jose Zaldy Dizon, Matt Flores and Brandon Sainz, UP Cebu advanced after ousting the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 92-89.

Dizon fired 23 points, Flores scored 20, while Sainz added 16 points for the Fighting Maroons.

As of this writing last night, UV and UP Cebu were still slugging it out for the coveted crown.

The champion will take home P100,000 while the first runner-up will pocket P50,000.
