Joey Canoy grabs WBA Asia crown

CEBU, Philippines — Joey “The Babyface” Canoy of ZIP/Sanman Boxing snatched the WBA Asia minimumweight belt with a smashing fifth round TKO of Jonathan “Hard Worker” Refugio last August 30 at the Polomolok Gym in South Cotabato.

The bout was a tactical showcase, with Canoy dominating throughout and scoring a knockdown that left Refugio unable to continue after round five.

“I’m ready for all the champions in 105. Hopefully, I will get my shot next. Thank you Sanman Boxing,” said Canoy, who improved his record to 22-5-2 now spiked with 14KOs.

The event, promoted by Sanman Boxing in association with Polomolok Mayor Bernie Palencia, featured an exciting undercards.

Former WBC and WBA interim bantamweight champion Reymart “The Assassin” Gaballo made a successful return, stopping Jenny Boy Boca in the first round with a brutal left hook.

Ramil Roda and Ar-ar Andales both prevailed by unanimous decision against Anthony Gilbuela and Ramel Antatan, Froilan Saludar stopped Reymark Taday in the second round, Carlo Demecillo beat Bryl Bayogos via fifth-round technical decision, while Lourinz Biasong won by disqualification against Ryan Makiputin in the sixth round. – EBV
