National Master Ganzon rules Harvey Duke Harris III chessfest
CEBU, Philippines — National Master Rommel Ganzon bested a strong field of contenders to emerge as champion in the Harvey Duke Harris III Annual Chess Tournament over the weekend at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
Ganzon was actually tied with Anthony Makinano and Arje Villarin with identical 8.0 points at the end of the 9-round Swiss system competition but Ganzon pocketed the P5,000 champion's purse courtesy of a higher tiebreaker.
Makinano and Villarin took home P3,000 and P2,000 for placing second and third, respectively.
Ariel Joseph Abellana, Chris Aldritz Pondoyo, and Ronald Ganzon occupied the fourth to sixth spots with 7.5 points apiece.
Rounding up the top 10 with 7.0 points each were Venancio Loyola Jr., NM Merben Roque, Diego Abraham Caparino, and Lemuel Montero.
Meanwhile, the top players in their respective categories were Reynaldo Flores and Vivencio Mendoza Jr. (seniors 60-above), Maria Kristine Lavandero and Shaira Mae Monsalud (female), Maria Kristine Lavandero and Seankenneth Cogonon (Under 16), and Marquis Angelo Mallorca and Jelleone Alsola (Under 12). — (FREEMAN)
