CEBU, Philippines — A bevy of sporting events is in store for the Talisaynon athletes leading to their annual fiesta celebration this October.

Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas, Jr. assured this during the highly successful grand opening of the 2023 Talisay City Mayor’s Cup Inter-Barangay Basketball and Volleyball Tournament last Monday, August 21, at the city’s sports complex in Barangay Poblacion.

“Another year of battle and excitement awaits the Mayor’s Cup players and participants,” Gullas shared on his Facebook page.

“Since daghan man kaayo’g teams sa basketball and volleyball, mao ni gi-open nato ang league og early.”

“But don’t worry, we have so much more other sports ready for all of you come September and during October sa fiesta,” he added.

Aside from basketball and basketball, the Talisaynons can engage in a variety of sports such as boxing, chess, arnis, karatedo, taekwondo, table tennis, soccer, cycling, shooting, skateboard, and badminton.

“Kani tanan, atoa ning giandam para gyud ang tanang mga mahiligon sa sports ma-engage and of course mas ma-develop pa,” Gullas said.

The sports-minded mayor adviced his constituents to visit the city’s sports commission office or inform their respective barangay captains if they want to suggest other sports.

“If daghan participants and kaya nato i-hold ang tournament, we will also have to look for a commissioner for that sport.

Ang ako lang, we hope for a fair and fun Mayor’s Cup with wonderful camaraderie in all sides,” Gullas furthered.

Ever since, Gullas has been a staunch advocate of “sports for all”, believing that it is an effective platform to discover new talents and give the young aspiring athletes an opportunity to shine that could very well be their launching pad towards reaching their dreams in life someday. — (FREEMAN)
