CEBU, Philippines — The Bacolod Tay Tung High School and Royal Star Trading-Don Bosco Dumaguete obliterated their respective rivals at the start of the SM-NBTC Visayas Qualifying Tournament yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Institute in Barangay Sawang Calero.
Johanan Raymond Castiller and Shannon Gray Sealey both came up with a solid double-double finish as Tay Tung pulverized the hapless Hardword Baller-Crusader of Bohol into smithereens, 106-30.
Castiller dropped 25 points on top of 11 rebounds and two blocks while Sealey tallied 12 markers laced with 11 boards and two assists for Tay Tung, which held Hardwood Baller scoreless while torching 28 points in the second quarter to turn an early 24-7 lead into an imposing 52-7 bulge at halftime.
Tay Tung continued its ruthless attack against the Boholanos in the second half leading to an eye-popping 76-points massacre.
On the other hand, Matthew James Jucom scattered 20 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and two assists while Crescille John Umali added 17 points, three steals, and two assists to power Royal Star-Don Bosco to a 99-52 demolition of the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Team B.
Jay Anthony Depillo finished with 14 points while Clark Torrevilla chipped in 11 markers, six steals and two assists for Royal Star, which never looked back after sprinting to an extra hot 20-0 start.
Later in the day, Royal Star-Don Bosco notched its second straight win with a 75-60 thrashing of the Black Shama Consolacion.
Jucom and Torevilla showed the way for Royal Star, combining for 29 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and six steals.
In the other result, John Lorenz Rejas cashed in 14 points, four rebounds and three steals while Sandro Ytac chalked up 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists as the Bentranco Bengals Bohol escaped past OCCCI-Western Leyte College (WLC) of Ormoc City, 64-62. — EBV
