Chao Sy plans for CBL revival
CEBU, Philippines — Noted Cebuano businessman/sportsman Lorenzo “Chao” Sy yesterday said he is contemplating on the revival of the Cebu Basketball League (CBL).
Sy, currently vice chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC), made it clear though thay they will only relaunch Cebu’s premiere commercial cage league that has been out of the scene for several years now only when things get back to normal.
“There’s been no commercial basketball acivity in Cebu for quite some time already and I think it’s high time to revive the CBL,” said Chao Sy, who is also a boxing promoter. “I am making this initiative not only to give our players who have been idled due to lack of tournaments especially during this pandemic a source of income but also to further develop their skills and better prepare them for bigger leagues.”
As for the CBL’s rebirth, Chao Sy said it will be a province-wide competition open to interested LGUs (local government units) and commercial ballclubs.
Only cagers aged 22 years old and above are allowed to see action.
Chao Sy said some LGUs have already expressed their intent to be part of CBL’s return but they will be limiting the number of participants from six to eight teams that will play in a home-and-away format.
“We’ll just wait and see for now but once everything returns to normalcy, it’s definitely a go for CBL’s comeback,” said Chao Sy.
