Summer is finally here, and there is no excuse for you not to get in shape this summer. There are a number of summer activities to choose from, basketball clinics, boot camps, triathlon and bike races. Here’s a short list of activities that may of interest to you:
***Sunsport Basketball Training Camp. It takes pride for being Cebu’s longest and best-run cage clinic. Camp Director Jojo Romarate teaches fundamentals of the game such as proper shooting dribbling and passing, as well as the technical aspects of the sport including offensive drills and defensive strategies.
The camp is held at the Sacred Heart Center Sports Club along D. Jakosalem Street, Cebu City. Training schedule is April 8 to May 3 for Level 1 and May 6-31 for Level 2. ***Ayala Center Cebu offers fitness activity this summer, starting with the Medicard Metabolic fitness boot camp by yours truly. This is the 8th year of summer boot camp in Ayala. It started already last Tuesday, April 9, and will end on June 1, Saturday. This year’s camp is extra special as we will be having a special Saturday fitness challenge starting on the 4th week. This fitness challenge makes the workout more interesting as they will forget how hard the workout will be. Aside from the biggest loser program, we will also be having some sessions with fencing champion Fr. Gem Guevara SJ, a former Philippine team member who represented the country in international games here and abroad. Also, we will be having Krav Maga sessions. Krav maga is a form of self-defense and physical training first developed by the Israeli army in the 1940s based on the use of reflexive responses to threatening situations. Participants of Medicard metabolic fitness boot camp will be getting free jersey and a finisher's medal.
***If high intensity workout is not your thing, then Zumba sessions are available at the Terraces from April 10 to May 24, Wednesday 6 to 7:30 pm and Fridays, 6 to 8pm. And for those who are not into dancing, Ayala offers Yoga at the Garden area near Belo clinic from April 10 to May 24, Wednesdays, 6 to 8 pm, and Fridays, 6 to 8pm. You can also try something new as Capoeira is available at the Active Zone from April 8 to April 30, and May 1 to May 24 at the Alcoves, Level 1 every 4 to 5pm.Taekwondo is available at the same venue at 2 to 3:30 pm. ***The San Vincente Off-Road Duathlon in Liloan happening on Easter Sunday, April 21. The categories are men’s 19 Under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, women’s open and relay. There will be cash prizes and trophies for podium finishers, while medals will be given to all finishers.
***There's a triathlon race in Naga City, Cebu - the SunLife 5150 is the perfect race for beginners and mid-season tune-ups. Enjoy the 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run. You might want to full-charge your camera batteries and phones as showbiz personalities Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderon, and Enchong Dy will be joining the race. Aside from the Olympic distance, Sunrise also features a sprint distance. The Go for Gold Sunrise Sprint covers a 750 swim, 20km bike and 5km run. Bboth races will be happening on April 28 at the famous Naga Boardwalk.
***Another challenge one may put in the list this summer is the Cebu Epic. It is a mountain bike competition that traverses the mountains of Cebu City and Toledo City. It spans 80km, with a total elevation of 3,000 meters, all in one day on June 9, 2019. This will be a team of two riders that will ride the full Epic 80km or the mini epic 54km course together. For this year, women's open and age categories are added.
