JAM 2018 SHS-AdC bags volleyball golds
CEBU, Philippines — Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu ruled the boys and girls volleyball events over Ateneo de Davao at the Jesuit Athletic Meet 2018 that came to a close yesterday at the SHS-Ateneo campus in Canduman, Mandaue City.
Ateneo de Manila, however stopped the hosts from winning championships in basketball and football in the JAM Classico of Manila vs. Cebu match-ups.
The Magis Eagles took the boys volleyball title through a thrilling five-set win over Ateneo de Davao, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, 26-28, 16-14. The Lady Magis Eagles also needed five sets to defeat their Davao sisters, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13. But in a couple of JAM Classicos featuring Cebu against Ateneo de Manila, the big city team came out on top. In basketball, the Blue Eaglets rode on the Kai Sotto’s 24 points and 16 rebounds to douse the upset-seeking Magis Eagles.
Forthsky Padrigao chipped in 12 points and four assists to support Sotto. Koko Tuadles led SHS-Ateneo de Cebu with 16. In football, Austin Basconcillo scored on a header coming off a corner kick in the 46th minute to give ADMU a 1-0 win over the hosts.
The match was a chess match with both sides plotting schemes to crack each other’s defense. Both teams had their chances but couldn’t convert with defense stepping up on both sides of the pitch.
In futsal, Ateneo de Davao edged SHS-Ateneo de Cebu, 4-3, to bag the championship. Cebu had scored first, but Davao scored two straight for a 2-1 lead in the first half. Cebu tied the game at 2-all but Davao countered a minute after Cebu’s goal for the final score, also in the first half. The second half was a scoreless battle for both sides.
The Jesuit Athletic Meet is a sports event featuring the ten Jesuit schools from all over the country. At its closing ceremony, it was announced that Xavier School Nuvali will host the next edition of the JAM in 2020. SHS-Ateneo de Cebu President Fr. Manny Uy, SJ turned over the symbolic torch to Xavier School President Fr. Ari Dy, SJ.
