UV bags CYBL Under-12 championship

CEBU, Philippines — The University of the Visayas are at it again, winning yet another championship as they defeated Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 36-26, to win the Under-12 age group title of the CYBL Summer League at the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Mango campus gym.

The Baby Lancers leaned on a fourth quarter run to break open a close game and score their second straight CYBL championship for the year. The game was tight and close, with UV taking the upper hand, 9-5, after the first period. SHS-Ateneo took a slim 13-12 halftime lead before the game was tied at 19-all after three quarters. But after the Magis Eagles took a 21-19 lead early in the fourth quarter, UV went on a 15-2 run for a commanding 34-23 lead with 3:30 left in the game.

Reezan Gonzaga, one of the smallest players on the floor, stood tall with two triples and bucket in the run that sealed the deal for UV. SHS-Ateneo struggled on the floor failing to register a field goal for the rest of the game, with all points coming from the free throw line from then on.

Gonzaga led UV with 12 points while Kurt Agmir Escuadro added eight. Rodolfo Froilan Maglasang led SHS-Ateneo with eight points as Dylan Jared Lim contributed six.

In other games, SHS-Ateneo 1 won over Team EDSA, 42-30, in the Under-15 Division 1 quarterfinals. They will face UV in the semifinals. In the Under-15 Division 2 semifinals, One on One B eliminated One on One C, 35-28.

In the Under-12 Division 2 Friendly Finale, One on One B beat Cebu Elite, 45-30 as One on One C won over St Benedict Childlhood Education Centre, 34-28. In an Under-18 game, Punta Princesa scraped past SHS-Ateneo, 38-33.
