Running coach

Allan Choachoy - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Running is one of the simplest forms of exercise. You just need to lace up a pair of running shoes and you are good to go.

Running is a repetitive form of exercise. Imagine the amount of stress or impact your joints and muscles undergo with running.  A simple brisk walking equates as much as two times your body weight and when you jog or run, it becomes around three times your body weight.

Running too much also comes with a prize. There are injuries from running like plantar fasciitis, iliotibial band syndrome (ITB), patella tendinitis, pulled muscle and sprained ankle to name a few.  That is why in running, there are factors you need to consider like form, stride, heart rate, lactate acid threshold and max Vo2, nutrition and hydration. For me, if you are serious in running, then you must get a running coach.

Jorry Ycong is one of the hardest working triathlete in Cebu. Jorry came from humble beginning as he started running at nine before he competed in Palarong Pambansa in his elementary and high school days.

He won silver medal in National games during his PRISSA stint. This was when the running community started to take notice on him and his achievements. In his college senior year, he started his coaching career, shares his vast knowledge and experience.

A criminology graduate, Jorry stressed the importance of proper form and making his student fast is his number one priority. He also wants his students to avoid injuries in the sport.

One of Jorry’s students is Dr. Marivic Tan, who started to train six years ago. Some coaches brag of coaching the strongest athletes but the athletes are already at their prime. Jorry, on the other hand, handles many beginners, first timers and helped them get a podium finishes.

Some of his students are Marly Busa, Giegie Abbu and Malou Shimizu.

Jorry’s program is simple and very consistent, comprising of the three most important elements namely mesocycle periodization speed, long fast, and long endurance runs with recovery runs in between. Typical training day consist of drills, drills, drills and drills inserted with leg strengthening workouts.

One of the biggest accomplishment of Jorry as a coach happened August last year as Dr. Marivic grabbed the second place in her category in the Cobra 70.3 Ironman. She was the only Filipino in her age group during that day.

Jorry , who is now part of the Omega Tri Team, also finished first 5150 tri in bohol and 3rd during the San Remigio 8080 Triathlon. You can reach Jorry through his facebook account.
