No stopping La Salle

SPORT EYE - Raffy T. Uytiepo - The Freeman

A few months ago, I wrote that the La Salle Archers will be the team to beat in this year’s UAAP.  The reason of course is the presence of former SWU behemoth Ben Mbala and King Archer JeronTeng.  As I write this column, La Salle has swept the first round, rolling to its seven win at the expense of archrival Ateneo Blue Eagles.  The Archers didn’t even need an injured Teng and coach Aldin Ayo who turned optometrist in the game against the UE Warriors and got suspended for giving the referee a pair of eyeglasses.  Ayo was contesting a no foul call.  La Salle mangled the Eagles and even led by as much as 26 points in the second half.  Mbala scattered 28 points while collecting 13 rebounds, highlighted by a monstrous jam. La Salle’s defense rattled the Eagles as they turned the ball several times.  Bacolod boy Kib Montalbo, Andrei Caracut and Tomas Torres provided support to Mbala.  Assistant coach Louie Gonzales however said it will be tougher in the second round with all the teams trying to plot ways to stop the La Salle rampage.  La Sallites are hoping the Archers will go all the way to annex the UAAP crown.  Some are even predicting a clean sweep of the second round as well.  Let’s change the name of the Archers to Sweepers.

Matobato has left the building

Just can’t help but get amused by the Senate marathon hearing on extra judicial killings which lasted past 10:00 o’clock in the evening last Monday.  When chairman Dick Gordon looked for Edgar Matobato so he could confront the policeman he accused of the killings, he was nowhere to be find prompting Gordon to comment “Matobato has left the building.”  To which Sen. Panfilo Lacson answered, Elvis ha? “Yes these are the famous lines alluded to Elvis by hosts to  inform the fans that they should go home as Elvis is no longer around.

Elvisaya

Speaking of Elvis, the thanksgiving party last Friday hosted by Architect Noni and Jo Mapeso was really memorable.  Elvisaya together with Jhun Villahermosa, the Frank Sinatra of Cebu and TV host Ate Ging Montesclaros of As Time Goes By treated the guest to music of yesteryears.  At one point, Elvisaya said  he was invited to perform with the dancing inmates at the CPDRC in a production  number called “Jailhouse Rock”.  But the current situation at the jail facility is not conducive at this time.  With so many “new arrivals”, (mostly drug addicts) there’s just no space to move.Elvisaya also said he could have performed at the New Bilibid Prison with Herbert Colanggo providing the state-of-art musical equipment, pero basin matokhang ta.” The party was hosted by veteran broadcaster Sam Costanilla who tickled the guests with his stand-up comedy gig.
