CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Sports Commission through its commissioner Ramon 'El Presidente' Fernandez has vowed to work closely with the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation under the leadership of Supreme Grandmaster Diony Canete to further promote this ingenious Filipino martial art.

Speaking before the delegates of the 14th WEKAF Congress yesterday at the J Centre Mall Convention Hall, Fernandez conveyed his thanks to WEKAF for its active role in spreading the art eskrima/arnis all over the world.

"Congratulations to WEKAF and SGM Canete for propagating the sport. Thanks also to the other nations who embraced our very own martial art," said Fernandez.

Acknowledging that the PSC has Arnis Philippines in its fold, Fernandez promised to work hand in hand with WEKAF for the growth and development of arnis in the country up to the grassroots level.

"Hopefully we will be communicating with each other and work out how we could propagate the sport further,"said Fernandez.

Sought for comment, SGM Canete said he is elated by the pronouncement of Fernandez as it will be for the good and betterment of arnis in the country.

"I am looking forward to a fruitful partnership with the PSC as we are one in our goal to further promote our very own martial art here and in other parts of the world," said SGM Canete.

From its humble beginnings with only 10 member countries since its inception in 1989, WEKAF has grown into a one big, respectable family of close to 40 member countries from six continents.

However, only 25 nations are represented in the 14th WEKAF Championship, which kicked off yesterday.

Host Philippines aims to end its 20-year title drought in the biennial tournament, but must expect a tough challenge from perennial champion United States of America.

Meanwhile, Norman Charles of Great Britain has been elected as the new president of WEKAF, with Antonio Lucero of the US serving as his asssistant for a two-year term that will end in 2018.

Hawaii, on the other hand, has been unanimously selected to host the 2018 WEKAF Championsip, while London has been awarded the right to stage next year's European Cup.  (FREEMAN)
