CEBU, Philippines - Cebuana netter Zethley Mae Alferez was the lone player in a field of close to 200 to claim a double championship in the Cebu leg of the 10th Cebuana Lhuillier Age-Group Tennis Tournament, which came to a close last Tuesday at CitiGreen Tennis Resort in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.
After winning her elimination and semifinal matches at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club, Alferez rushed to CitiGreen where she sustained her momentum on the way to collect two titles via the girls 16 and 18 categories.
Alferez first played the girls 16 where she stunned tournament topseed Carlyn Bless Guardo of Isulan, Sultan Kudarat in a three-set thriller, 7-6, 2-6,10-7.
After barely two hours of rest, Alferez and Guarde met again, this time for the girls 18 crown.
What was expected to be another close match turned into a lopsided battle as Alferez handily wiped out Guarde in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 to bask in a golden double.
In the girls 18 doubles, Shyne Villareal and Kristin Renee Salimbangon silenced Precious Larriz Coderos and Cristell Marie Sampan, 8-0, to take home the champion's trophy. The Cebuanos also dominated the boys side, with Christopher Enriquez and Francis Hidalgo outsmarting Jose Maria Pague and Marc Suson, 8-6.
Cesar Kristofer Salimbangon and Venz Anton Alforque dumped Rupert Tortal and Prince Najeb Langitao, 8-2, to rule the boys 14 doubles, while Noelle Urgello and Phel Hael snared the girls crown at the expense of Shedel Gica and Lyrah Mae Repollo, 8-4. (FREEMAN)
