CEBU, Philippines – Johnny Arcilla did not disappoint his fellow Cebuanos after he scored a double victory in the Palawan Pawnshop-Dagitab Festival Open Tennis Tournament yesterday at the Naga Tennis Club.
Arcilla won his third straight singles title after defeating Onyok Anasta, 6-4, 6-5.
Anasta took the lead on the first set, but he got into trouble miscalculating his shot and failed to pass through the net. Arcilla capitalized with some drop shots that gave him the lead, 5-4.
Anasta continued to lost focus as he let Arcilla seal the first set with an ace.
Even if his hands are hurting, Arcilla zoomed to the lead in the second set, but Anasta kept close, 4-5. Arcilla regained his composure as he scored three straight points in the tie-break.
Aside from the singles title, Arcilla together with Ronard Joven also snared the doubles title against Anasta and Patrick John Tierro, 7-6, 6-1.
With his double championship, Arcilla pocketed P70,000 in total cash prize. Before this tournament, Arcilla also won the titles in the Tuna Festival and Pintaflores netfest.
Meanwhile, Arcilla and the rest of the ranked players dedicated their performances to long-time Philta referee Godfrey Callao who just passed away. (FREEMAN)
