Telstra draws first blood in Evo League finals

CEBU, Philippines – The Telstra-Teletech Boomerangs downed the Supportsave Dragons, but not without passing through some scare before pulling off a 84-83 cliffhanger in the opener of their best-of-three finals series under the Evo League of the 11th CSCC E-League men's basketball tournament last Saturday at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.

Sam Jordan Hermosa sparkled with 28 points on top of 13 rebounds, six assists and three blocks as Telstra moved one step closer from clinching the title and a shot at challenging the lottery winner in the Elite Classic.

Jasper Diaz banged in 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, while John Rey Jacaban and Jaygard Vios chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively, underscoring Telstra's balanced offensive.

After taking an early 24-16 lead, Telstra toned down in offense but fought steadier when it mattered to beat Supportsave by the slimmest margins.

Germain Jo Guarisma had a breakout performance with 38 points,  four assists and three steals for Supportsave. The missing link was Nino Belanded, who was held off to a season-low 17 points and 13 rebounds. — EBV (FREEMAN)
