SWU spikers draw first blood

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Defending champion Southwestern University men’s and women’s squad took the Game 1 of their respective best-of-three championship series in the volleyball event of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc., at the University of San Carlos main gym yesterday.

Led by Dave Cabaron and Rommel Pepito, the SWU survived a thrilling five set game against USC, 25-23, 19-15, 25-21, 26-24, 15-9, that inched them closer to a back-to-back title in the men’s division.

After winning the first set, USC bounced back in the second and third set with the efforts of Gavinito Yongco and John Kenneth Sarcena.

But Pepito utilized his championship experience to help SWU to get reclaim the momentum and win the two succeeding sets.

The Lady Cobras, on the other hand, went too much for the Lady Jaguars, 25-21, 25-14, 25-17.

Coach Grace Antigua's girls had a promising start, enjoying several leads behind the efforts of Christine Diore Vergara, Ana Aldave and Daniela Alfeche.

A win today in Game 2 will give the SWU Lady spikers their second grandslam title in CESAFI. (FREEMAN)
