CEBU, Philippines - The first ever Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (IBP-PICPA) Open Chess Team Tournament will take place this weekend at the second level of SM City-Cebu.
"With this strategy, combining lawyers and CPAs, we are hoping to encourage more participants especially from other fields of profession such as doctors and engineers among others which is really our main goal in the future," said lawyer Rheneir Mora of the organizing IBP-Cebu Chapter during the formal launching of the event the other night at CYMK Dessert Factory.
Also a CPA, Mora first entered the Cebu chess scene by spearheading the first PICPA tilt in 2012. The following year, he set up a chess showdown between laywers and CPAs, which eventually led into a joint venture by the two groups.
"We are egging on all lawyers and CPAs who love to play chess to be part of this kind fo endeavor," said Rodrigo Ababat of PICPA-Cebu Chapter.
FIDE Arbiter Marvin Y. Ruelan said as total of nine teams have confirmed their entry in the two-day joust that also serves as among the culminating artivities of the 'Cebu Law Week.'
These are Team Mora, Casa Ilongga, OPASCOR, DPWH and the teams led by Felix Balbona, Carlo Maraat, Jun Ortiz, and lawyer Jason Genobiagon.
Each team shall be composed of four regular players and one alternate. Each team must field in at least one CPA or lawyer or a combination of both.
The champion will receive P12,000, while the second to fourth placers will take home P8,000, P6,000, and P4,000, respectively.
