The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The most outstanding performers of the 2014 MS Motosuit Motocross Series will finally be honored in an elaborate awarding ceremony this Saturday night at PAGCOR's Teatro Casino of Waterfront-Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Barangay Lahug,  this city.

Double champions Jubenile Abellar, Roscel Gungob and Jed Luna banner the list of top achievers who will be feted for their stirring exploits in the racetrack during the past year. Abellar emerged as the overall champion in the pro and expert open categories, Gungob lorded it over the executive A and B, while Luna dominated the open enduro and the beginners open production.

The ever daring John Flores and BJ Pepito, overall champs in the intermediate and mini class 65cc, respectively, will grab part of the spotlight alongside Keith Lloyd Abrenica (mini class 65cc), Alex Abalo (local enduro), JP Cuesta (beginners open production), Jonathan Cuyos (executive C), and JayR Gualiza (underbone).

All major awardees are in the running for the coveted 'Rider of the Year' accolade that is the main highlight of the event that will promptly start at 7 p.m.

Expected to grace the affair is Provincial Board Member Joven Mondigo from the Fourth District of Cebu. He will be formally introducted by Madam Richell P. Pestañas, a retired education program supervisor who is presently an administrator of a private school and college professor at the Cebu Technological University (CTU).

"Though it's late already but I still decided to hold this traditional awards night to give due honor and recognition to our top riders for their outstanding performances during our race series last year," said MS Motosuit big boss Lou Ornopia, once a 'Sportsman of the Year' awardee by the Sportswriters Association of Cebu. "I'm also a bit sentimental on this because it was in 2014 that I decided to make a comeback as organizer in the racing circuit."

Two years ago, Ornopia decided to forgo with his annual series so he could focus on his businesses. However, he made a well-deserved comeback in 2014 due to strong public clamor coupled with his unflinching support to the sport that literally runs through his veins.

"Motocross is such a big part of me that is why I'm just here to stay for the sport," assured Ornopia, who had been organizing races for nearly two decades now that earned him the titular distinction as 'Godfather of Cebu motocross'. — EBV (FREEMAN)
