Fuentes suffers TKO loss

Lemuel P. Maglinte - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – Rocky ‘Road Warrior’ Fuentes of the ALA Boxing Gym failed in his bid to win the WBC flyweight title, losing via sixth round TKO to undefeated Nicaraguan superstar Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzales (41-0, 35KOs) last night in Yokohama, Japan.

In a report from boxingscene.com, the underdog Fuentes fought hard through five rounds, but was caught with a vicious right from Gonzales in the sixth round. The 28-year-old Cebuano boxer was able to beat the count, but the Nicaraguan immediately launched an assault forcing the referee to halt the fight.

This is Fuentes’ second crack at the world title after falling short against undefeated Thai Amnat Ruenroeng via unanimous decision for the IBF flyweight crown on January 22 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

A win would have made Fuentes the second world champion from the famed ALA Boxing Gym next to WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes.

Gonzales improved his record to an impressive 41-0, spiked with 35 stoppages, while Fuentes suffered his eight career loss in 45 fights.

It was Gonzales’ first successful title defense after claiming the title last May 9 by knockout out Japanese Akira Yaegashi in Tokyo, Japan.

The Nicaraguan continues to be the most dangerous boxer in the 112 lbs  division being No.9 ranked in the world pound-for-pound rating of the Ring Magazine. (FREEMAN)
