CEBU, Philippines – Team Cebu City-University of Cebu once again stamped its class with authority to rule the 6th Philippine Open and Inter-Scholastic Table Tennis Championships staged recently in Angeles City.
TCC-UC veteran player Berto Bas was the biggest winner as he qualified for the World Liha Championship to be held in London next year.
The Barangay Pasil-native Bas came up with a triple championship through the old-style pingpong racket action in team competition together with Efren Jacalan and Sotero Jose Rojo, in national singles and international singles.
The UC players, on the other hand, also lorded it over in the team event both in men and women’s open and collegiate division.The men’s team composed of Dannel Jay Tormis, Val Stephen Jaca and Francis Bendebel scored a 3-0 shutout of Air Force Team.
Tormis, Jaca, Bendebel along with Agbon also upended Adamson University, 3-0, in the collegiate men’s team final. UC’s Team B composed of Lemuel Agbon, Fausto Zeus Cumangingking and John Vincent Cabaluna placed third.
In the distaff side, TCC-UC had a 1-2 finish with the group of Jerny Kaye Pepito, Diana Oliverio and Jeramae Saromines outsmarting its team B composed of playing coach Jessica Jawad-Honoridez, Jennifer Jacalan and Leslie Agbon.
In the women’s collegiate action, Pepito, Oliverio and Saromines along with Leslie Agbon won the title against General Santos City.
Tormis and Jaca also grab the men’s doubles title, while Jerny Kaye Pepito and Diana Oliverio topped the women’s doubles.
Pepito and Oliverio also had a 1-2 finish in the women’s singles as Tormis settled for a silver medal.
The tandem of Tormis and Pepito also shone brightly in mixed doubles.
In the high school level, John Vincent Cabaluna and Diana Oliverio topped their respective divisions, while the City Central School boys handed one silver and two bronze medals. (FREEMAN)
