CEBU, Philippines – Traditional powerhouses University of San Carlos, University of the Visayas, and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored crucial wins to lead the way in different divisions of the Alaska Basketball D-league 2014. USC showed its might in the Under 10, 12 and 17 divisions while UV and SHS-AdC made their presence felt in the Under 17 and Under 15 age groups, respectively.
In the Under 17 Division 1, the USC Warriors “B” team scored two wins over the weekend: trouncing Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) 69-33, and squeezing past SHS-AdC, 50-45. They are now 4-0, followed by idle UV which has a 3-0 slate.
In the Under 15 division, SHS-AdC 1 recorded its third straight win in as many games after 51-22 win over USC South-B. USC North stopped Thumbs Up, 58-30, to remain at second place with a 2-1 record. Surprise team Ormoc went 4-1 after scoring two wins: defeating USC South-A, 70-33 and CBP Angels, 65-60. They now trail UV-B (3-0) in Group A.
In the Under 12 Division 1, USC toyed with UV-A, 60-16 then beat erstwhile undefeated DBTC (3-1), 50-13, for a 6-0 slate and the top seeding going into the playoffs. In other Under 12 Division 1 games, SHS-AdC A (3-2) won over USC South-A (0-3), 43-16. USJR-A defeated Thumbs Up, 50-32. Thumbs Up (1-4) recovered to stop UV-A (2-3), 40-36.
It was USC anew in the Under 10 division as it ran past SHS-AdC (3-2), 56-20, for its fourth straight win without a loss. Monterey School of Talisay is now 2-2 after winning over USJR (1-2), 31-16.
In Under 10 Group B play, USC South scored two wins, nipping DBTC, 23-21, and SHS-AdC B, 52-10. UV tied USC South at 3-0 after stopping AE Sports of Toledo, 52-10.
In Division 2 games, St. Benedict’s won over VEPS, 33-11 in an Under 12 game.
Meanwhile, SCSIT won over SHS-AdC C, 36-10, as Ormoc defeated DBTC-B, 41-30. In the Under 15 age group, SIPS defeated Ormoc B, 42-35 for its first win. USJR-B beat MOCA, 33-28, while USC South C crushed AE Sports, 49-25.
In the Under 17 Division 2 games, SCSIT cruised to a 61-25 win over Monterey School, while One on One won over MOCA, 47-37.
The Alaska Basketball D-League 2014 is a project of the Cebu Youth Basketball League. It features 76 teams in four age groups which are further classified into two divisions. Division 1 is for the contender teams while Division 2 is for the developmental teams. A new Girls Under 17 Division will kick off its games on October 6. (FREEMAN)
