CEBU, Philippines - The Sugbo Bikers in partnership with the city government of Cebu will stage the first ever Sugbo Seawall Side Bicycle Oval Race on May 31 to June 1 at the South Road Properties.
City Councilor Gerry Carillo, himself a bike enthusiast, formally launched the event yesterday at Porto's Diner and Grille together with the top officials of Sugbo Bikers led by Alberto Rabasol and Fernando Sabal.
"We are holding this activity to enjoin the Cebuanos to make biking as part of their daily exercise," said Carillo. "This would be a long-term goal and we're planning to hold a monthly competition to further promote biking among the Cebuano community."
Carillo said they're expecting over a thousand pedal-pushers to join the two-day tilt that features mountainbike on the first day and a road race covering 15 laps of 2.8-kilometer per lap on the finale.
The categories to be contested in both races are the juniors (18 to 39 years old), seniors (40-above) and the premier open class. The organizers, however, are planning to include special classes for the 'golden boys' (60-above) and female riders.
The champion in each category will go home P5,000 richer, while the second to fifth will pocket P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P500, respectively.
Aside from certificates of participation and free lunch to the first 100 registrants, all the participants will have a chance to win exciting prizes during the raffle draw at the end of the race.
"We want to make it sure that all the entries will not go home empty-handed," assured Carillo.
Registration fee is pegged at P260 with one raffle coupon. For further details, interested parties may contact Jo at 254-3521 or Alberto at 0932-9129422. (FREEMAN)
