CEBU, Philippines - Siblings Mark and Clifton “Tonton†Paray made it a 1-2 finish in the premier open class of the first leg of the 2014 Kartzone Autocross Solo Series held last weekend at the Kartzone Racing Circuit in Brgy. Kasambagan, Cebu City.
It was a closely fought battle for the top prize as six contenders, including veteran racers Jess Garcia and Derek Arculli, were busy trading fastest laps. In a course design that was estimated to clock about one minute per lap, most contenders had stayed within that zone during their first run. Separating each contender were mere tenths of a second.
However, in their second runs, all contenders were able to muster something extra as they all broke the one minute barrier and started posting sub-minute lap times. First to set a sub-minute lap was Tonton Paray, who did a 58.684 second lap on his Honda CRX.
Next up was Derek Arculli on his Mazda Miyata, clocking in a time of 59.406. Not to be outdone, Dan Savino monstered his Honda Integra to a 58.965 lap. Mark Paray clocked in the day’s best time with a 58.214 on his Honda NSX.
It was almost an all-Honda podium with the Paray siblings and Savino clocking the top three times until Jess Garcia clocked in a 58.825 on his Subaru Impreza STi. His blistering lap relegated Savino to 4th place spoiling a possible all-Honda podium.
The Paray brothers also took top honors in other categories. Tonton dominated the Superstreet Light and Modified Light Novice categories, while Mark took top honors in the Modified Heavy Category.
Another racer shared the spotlight with the Paray brothers. Mitsugbo’s Kenneth Migrino had a sterling performance giving him top honors in the Street Light, Street Heavy and Superstreet Heavy categories. Other winners were Savino (Modfied Heavy Novice) and Garcia (Modified Light Expert).
These winners bested many other competitors who, in total, clocked in more than three hundred laps over the two-day event. The next leg of the 2014 Kartzone AutoX Solo series will be on August 9-10. (PR)(FREEMAN)
