CEBU, Philippines - Some of Cebu's top pawnpushers will once again test each other's wits as the 2nd VMA-Power Open Chess Tournament kicks off today at the Colonnade Mall along Colon street, this city.
Close to P30,000 in cash prize is at stake for the top performers of the two-day, 9-round Swiss system competition bankrolled by Engr. Marvyne 'Suntzu' Guardiana of VMA-Power Group of Companies in association with the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) under the leadership of Engr. Jerry Maratas. Guardiana is also the current CEPCA Vice President for External Affairs.
The champion will go home P6,000 richer, while the second to fifth placers will receive P4,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively. The sixth to 10th will get P500 each, the 11th to 20th will earn P400, while those who will make it to the top 30 list will get a consolation prize of P300.
The top finisher among Cepcans, junior, kiddie and lady players will receive a P500 incentive.
Entry fee is pegged at P200. CEPCA secretary and sports committee chairman Jun Olis said the organizers will accept on-site registration.
