CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) and the University of San Carlos (USC) shared the limelight after being declared as overall champions in their respective divisions in lawn tennis event of the 13th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season recently at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.
The UV netters lorded it over in the men's division with a total of four golds and one bronze, while the Carolinians ruled the distaff side with five golds, one silver and one bronze.
The tandem of Janel Joy Pintor and Marc Norman Enriquez delivered a pair of golds for UV after they fended off Israel Abarquez, Jr. and Jansmith Cabungcal of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 8-6, in their closely-fought final battle under the men's doubles.
Their boys counterparts Francis Hidalgo and Norman Joseph Enriquez added two more golds for UV after they edged out the USC tandem of Derek Tabotabo and Charlemagne Cabarrubias in the secondary division.
Ark Galo handed UV's lone bronze in the boys singles.
In the women's side, the vaunted Siso siblings Sally Mae Siso and Sallydine of USC powered their way to a golden double following a lopsided 8-2 victory over UV's Mae Angeli Amorin and Mary Christine Bellita. The bronze medal went to USJ-R's Dina Bayhonan and Hannah Grace Austre.
Anthea Guarin and Leanne Transporte produced two more gilts for the Carolinians after they subdued Amelie Ligutom and Sie Go of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu to lord it over in the secondary girls doubles. USC also had one bronze from Mary Claire Lazaga in the women's singles.
SHS-Ateneo though still has something to cheer about as it snared one gold courtesy of Kristine Renee Salimbangon, who outlasted USC's Beverly Olive Enriquez in the secondary girls singles final. The Ateneans also picked up a bronze through Josette Paulette Nator, who placed at joint third place with UV's Sheena Camporedondo.
Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), on the other hand, ended its campaign with two bronze medals from Denzel Garciano in the boys singles and Lorenz Abarquez and Kieffer Adriatico in the boys doubles. (FREEMAN)
