CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano go-kart ace Jette Calderon once again scorched the racetracks with savvy to grab the KT expert title during the third leg of the 2013 Kartzone Superkart Series last Sunday at the Kartzone Racing Circuit in Brgy. Kasambagan, this city.
Kartzone General Manager Kym Limgenco said the race was highlighted by the introduction of a new section of the racetrack, which has been christened the 'Momentum chicane'. It was built to slow down the speed of the karters as they approach the start-finish straight making for more overtaking opportunities. The race also ran in an ante-clockwise direction, something different from Kartzone's usual clockwise race.
Limgenco, who placed fourth in the FH Novice dominated by Joey Seno, added that the intense race was red-flagged during lap 14 due to collision between Rei Aleman and Earl Taborada at the Momentum chicane. It was then restarted to complete the 25 laps.
When the dust settled, Calderon came out spraying the victory champagne with a total time of 12 minutes and 57 seconds.
Joseph Rojo placed second, while Sean Velasco and JT Gullas finished third and fourth, respectively.
In the KT masters, Stefan Reroma and Rei Aleman took the top two sports, while Harold Justin Go ruled the KT novice action followed by Earl Taborada and Mark Paray.
In the mini ROK category, Mikey Jordan of Manila took home the top honors as Bianca Bustamante and Jarond Mesina ended up second and third.
Mesina was actually leading the race until he suffered mechanical problems on the seventh lap, relinquishing the lead to Liam Sacal. Sacal, however, was black flagged on lap 15 for unsportsmanlike conduct when he tried to force Jordan off the track in an effort to defend first place. As a result, Sacal was disqualified.
In the FH expert battle, Frederick Cortes grabbed the champion's trophy, while Michael Jordan and Cluve Fermin sealed the next two spots. — EBV
