CEBU, Philippines - Ceferino Vizco, Jr. took home the championship in Paknaan Open Chess Tournament the other day in Brgy. Paknaan, Mandaue City.
Vizco and Jimson Bitoon were actually tied with 6.0 points each at the end of the 7-0 round Swiss system competition, but Vizco bagged the crown by virtue of a superior tie-break output.
Vizco opened his bid with a win against Manuel Abucay. He settled for a draw with Mark Mangubat, before edging out Marc Dion Alunan and NM Arnold Cadiz. He came up with another draw with Merben Roque before posting back-to-back victories over Kyle Sevillano and Joel Pacuribot.
Merben Roque wound up third in the event sponsored by the barangay council of Paknaan headed by Brgy. Capt. Malaquias Soco and organized by Kagawad Willy Semblante and Eden Diano.
The fourth to ninth placers with 5.0 points apiece were Kyle Sevillano, Venancio Loyola, Leonardo Alidani, Diego Claro, Anthony Makinano and Joel Pacuribot.
NM Cadiz completed the top 10 cast with 4.5 points. (FREEMAN)
