Talisay City makes it 3-0 in GUV Cup quarterfinals
CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City volleybelles cruised to their third straight after whipping Tabogon in straight sets in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center.
Talisay only needed 42 minutes to trounce Tabogon, 25-17, 25-21 and take the lead in women's group A with an immaculate 3-0 slate.
Talisay, the first runner-up last season, earlier on by default over Ginatilan.
Liloan is breathing down Talisay's neck with a 2-0 card, while Sta. Fe and Toledo City share the third spot with identical 2-1 record.
Sta. Fe tasted its first defeat but not without giving up a good fight against Toledo. The islanders powered to a 25-20 in the opening session, but Toledo went on to sweep the next two sets, 25-17, 25-16.
Sta. Fe quickly bounced back though and vented its ire on Tabogon via a 25-17, 25-19 decision.
In group B, defending champion Mandaue City needed just 21 minutes to demolish Oslob, 25-4,25-8 in only 21 for its second win.
Group B, however, is currently led by Catmon and Minglanilla with 3-0 marks.
After winning by forfeiture over Bantayan, Catmon shackled Tabuelan, 25-11, 25-7, while Minglanilla collected its third win at the expense of Alegria in a three-set thriller, 23-25,25-20,25-21.
The quarterfinal battle resumes today with five games featuring Toledo vs. Moalboal, Oslob vs. Alegria, Ginatilan vs. Liloan, Talisay vs. Sta. Fe and Mandaue vs. Tabuelan. (FREEMAN)
