8 barangays to pilot solid waste management

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Eight barangays have been identified by the Cebu City government as pilot areas in the re-implementation of the “No Segregation, No Collection” policy.

These are Barangays Tinago, Tejero, San Roque, Carreta, Barrio Luz, Mabolo, Basak San Nicolas, and Basak Pardo.

Emma Ramas, overseer of the city’s Solid Waste Management Board (SWMB), said the identified barangays will have a meeting with the SWMB along with the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO), City Environmental Sanitation and Enforcement Team (CESET) and the Department of Public Services (DPS) today to discuss how the policy will be implemented.

SWMB has committed to support the selected barangays in the implementation of the policy.

“Ang among commitment to these barangays--we will give all our efforts in supporting them para ma successful sila sa ilang implementation,” Ramas said.

According to Ramas, Barangays Tejero and Basak San Nicolas have already made some efforts to revive the policy ahead.

Tejero has conducted separate collections for its biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste while Basak San Nicolas started its own solid waste management initiatives since last year.

“Active kaayo ang Barangay Basak San Nicolas. Last year pa, they were the first to invite us to meet with their stakeholders, they gathered at their gym. They even invited the DILG and their stakeholders,” Ramas said.

Ramas reminded all the other barangays to implement the policy in compliance with the city ordinance and Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. She warned the barangay officials that anybody can sue them if they will not implement the law.

“Bisan og wala sila naapil sa pilot phase, they should not be complacent,” Ramas added. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
