Cebu City always ready for disasters — Labella

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has assured that the city will remain ready in case disaster like typhoons hits the city.

“We are always prepared and we will always do our best,” said Labella during the send-off ceremony held yesterday for the team sent to typhoon-struck Catanduanes to deliver assistance and to help in the rebuilding efforts.

“We have enough equipment. Of course, if there’s a need to augment, we have the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) and we also have other well-meaning private people, contractors who have the civic duty and commitment to social responsibility,” he said.

The mayor stressed preparedness is necessary especially during these times where calamities have been occurring in different parts of the country.

“Calamities are events that we’re never sure that it will happen but if it happens, we should always be ready. We have our disaster people and I’m confident that they are always ready,” said Labella.

The City Hall team tasked to provide help in the rebuilding efforts and to deliver assistance to Catanduanes left for the typhoon-hit province yesterday.

Councilor David Tumulak, who leads the 60-man team, earlier said the aid they will bring include the P5 million check-donation earlier approved by the City Council, P97,000 cash donation from the Cebu City residents, food, and water, among others.

He added the team will also assist in the cleaning and clearing operations in the place.

“I told them just be what you are. It will be an experience. We have done this (during) Yolanda in Samar and Leyte. We have tested and proven. We have done this in Cotabato and Davao del Sur, so expect the same to be done,” said Labella.

“Of course, we admonished them to be extra careful. That’s why we sent nurses and also doctors to take care of their health concerns. These are dedicated engineering workers and I’m very confident under the leadership of Councilor Dave Tumulak that they will be able to do their part in helping mitigate the impact of the tragedy that had befallen our brother Filipinos in Catanduanes,” he added.

Labella said the city government will still accept donations for the residents of Catanduanes and it will be sent through other means. — KQD (FREEMAN)
