CEBU, Philippines — One person was injured after a fire hit a pension house along Don Gil Garcia Street, Barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City yesterday morning.

The fire started on the second floor of the inn prompting Alfredo Baje, 51, to jump off the window resulting in his injury.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Leo Magallon, investigator of Cebu City Fire Department, said they received the alarm at 8:30 a.m. and managed to control the fire few minutes later.

Fire out was declared at 9:19 a.m. The damage was pegged at P200,000.

Magallon said they are still conducting investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

The fire sent Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Cebu chapter officials into panic because of its proximity to the regional blood center. PRC-Cebu chapter administrator Maria Vera de Jesus said the fire was just 25 meters away from their office.

She assured that the blood center is safe from the fire. The Regional Blood Center is open 24-7. The office was just refurbished last March.

De Jesus said responders from the PRC were also around yesterday to help out. In fact, some of the guests of the pension house were assisted by them for psychosocial assessment.

She said that PRC personnel also attended the injured guest before rushing him to Chong Hua Hospital. (FREEMAN)
